Early Childhood and Family Literacy Professional Development
- Parent Education Profile and Parent Support for Children’s Learning- This series introduces participants to the Parent Education Profile (PEP), a curriculum and assessment framework. The PEP organizes instruction for parents to support children’s literacy development and tracks parents’ progress. Participants learn parenting behaviors that lead to stronger outcomes for children and how to engage parents in those activities.
Audiences: parent and early childhood coordinators, social workers, family assistants
- Family Literacy for Solid Foundations, K-2 Team Training- These sessions provide structure for teams of educators, parents, and community providers to create and implement a customized, interactive family literacy program of activities for parents of children in grades K-2. Teams will go through the process of developing activities geared to the school’s curricula. A small cadre of parent leaders works with other parents through peer-to-peer learning strategies. Participants will have opportunities to practice and plan activities.
Audiences: teams of early childhood teachers, parent-school coordinators, parent leaders, and representatives from community-based partners.
- Train the Trainer Workshops: Interactive Parent Learning- Single-event workshops designed for those who train parents. Each workshop presents the research base along with practical activities, tips for training parents, and follow-up materials. Audiences: parent-school coordinators, parent leaders, early childhood coordinators, and representatives from community based partners
- Vocabulary Development and Extending Conversation for Pre-K–K. The session guides trainers in techniques to help parents engage children in extended conversations.
- Family Math for K-2. The session guides trainers in the basics of teaching Family Math, including tips for introducing math concepts and selecting K-2 activities.
- Homework and Study at Home for Grades 2-3. The session prepares trainers to engage parents in the critical work of supporting their children’s school learning, using the Solid Foundation course materials for parents (all participants will receive materials).
